Get Yourself Tested: Norwalk Health Department Offering Free Hepatitis C Screenings in May
NORWALK, CT – To help raise awareness about the dangers of Hepatitis C and to promote early detection, the Norwalk Health Department is offering free Hepatitis C testing throughout the month of May. Testing will be offered during clinic hours on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9 am – 12 pm and on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 – 4:30 pm. No appointment is necessary.
Hepatitis C, a liver infection caused by the Hepatitis C virus, is one of the leading causes of liver cancer in the United States. For some, Hepatitis C is a short-term illness, but for many others it can be a long-term, chronic infection. Testing for
Hepatitis C is crucial for Hepatitis C infections often have no signs or symptoms. In fact, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an estimated 40% of people living with Hepatitis C do not know they are infected.
With early detection, Hepatitis C can be treated and the risk for major complications, such as scarring of the liver or liver cancer, can be significantly reduced. “Getting tested is the only way to know if you have Hepatitis,” shares Darleen Hoffler, Norwalk Health Department’s Clinical Supervisor. “Knowing your diagnosis early is incredibly important and gives you the opportunity to get lifesaving treatment to cure Hepatitis C.”
