A second team, Mike Murphy of Fairfield and Chip Steppacher of New Canaan, completed 153 holes on the same day under the same conditions. Both twosomes played with golf cars as part of CancerCare’s Longest Day of Golf, a series of summer fundraising excursions by golfing volunteers. About 30 are participating. Although the amount raised in pledges was still being compiled, Masucci said he is hopeful of exceeding the figures collected in previous years.
The Longest Day of Golf series raises well into six figures each year and has marshaled more than $1.5 million to date to support the work of CancerCare in providing professional counseling, education and financial assistance to Connecticut residents whose lives have been affected by cancer. The services are offered free of charge by master’s level oncology social workers and assisted nearly 2,000 individuals last year.
