John Masucci of Orange and his partner Karl Dombroski of Fairfield endured temperatures that hit 93 degrees and played 184 consecutive holes of golf —the equivalent of 10 full rounds-plus—in a dawn-to-dusk marathon at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich to raise funds for CancerCare of Connecticut (June 9).

A second team, Mike Murphy of Fairfield and Chip Steppacher of New Canaan, completed 153 holes on the same day under the same conditions.

Both twosomes played with golf cars as part of CancerCare’s Longest Day of Golf, a series of summer fundraising excursions by golfing volunteers. About 30 are participating.

Although the amount raised in pledges was still being compiled, Masucci said he is hopeful of exceeding the figures collected in previous years.

Masucci reported his rounds were in the 80s, reflecting the 11-handicap he carries at the Oak Lane Golf & Country Club in Orange where his playing partner is also a member. He said afterward: “It’s wonderful to be able to combine a recreation you enjoy with an activity that has a positive impact on the lives of people who need support.”

The Longest Day of Golf series raises well into six figures each year and has marshaled more than $1.5 million to date to support the work of CancerCare in providing professional counseling, education and financial assistance to Connecticut residents whose lives have been affected by cancer.

The services are offered free of charge by master’s level oncology social workers and assisted nearly 2,000 individuals last year. Additional information is available by calling (203) 854-9911 or online at www.cancercare.org.
