Bridgeport righthander Barry Wertzler had a lot to smile about going into the second half of his start Friday night. A few of the Camden Riversharks desperately wanted to see that smile washed away.
Wertzler carried a no-hitter for 4.1 innings before dropping it over the plate to Camden catcher Randy McGarvey. McGarvey singled to left.
Wertzler carried a 6-0 shutout into the eighth before dropping it over the plate to outfielder L.J. Biernbaum. Biernbaum hit an RBI double to center. The hit led a four-run rally, making it 6-4.
But in the end, Wertzler couldn’t frown too much. Relievers Chris Eickhorst and Derek Ellison took care of the final six batters to preserve the win for him. Ellison picked up his first save.
The win puts Bridgeport in first place in the Liberty Division for the first time this season and drops Camden a half game back.
The teams play two tomorrow to make up for Friday afternoon’s rainout. The first game begins at 5:05 p.m. Tickets are available online or by calling 1-866-SHARKS-9.
