The Long Island Ducks defeated the Bridgeport Bluefish on Thursday 5-4 before a packed house of 7,134 at Citibank Park. The attendance set a new team single game record, breaking last year’s mark of 7,120, also set on July 3.

Clint Nageotte worked the first six innings for the Ducks, allowing just two runs on nine hits with three strikeouts. Abe Alvarez (3-0) picked up the win after throwing a scoreless seventh. Rafael Bergstrom (4-5) pitched well over seven innings but took the loss, giving up three runs on eight hits. Joe Valentine converted his eighth save of the year.

The Ducks pushed across the go-ahead run in the seventh with Jay Gibbons scoring on a double play from third. Long Island would hit into seven twin-killings on the night. The Ducks scored two much-needed insurance runs in the eighth, with P.J. Rose and Damian Rolls picking up RBI hits. The Bluefish rallied for two in the ninth before bowing out. Rose, Carl Everett and Gibbons each had two hits for the Ducks, and Dennis Donovan went 2-for-2 at the dish. Ryan Bear hit his sixth home run of the season for the Bluefish as part of a 3-for-4 night.

The Ducks continue their final series of the first half on Friday against the Bridgeport Bluefish. Gametime is 7:05 p.m., and the Citibank park gates open at 6:05 p.m. Following the game, fans will be treated to a Grucci Fireworks Extravaganza, courtesy of Government Service Administrators. The Ducks will also unveil their 2008 red, white and blue patriotic jerseys, which will be auctioned off for charity throughout the month. Fans unable to attend the game can tune into all the action live on WNYG 1440 AM, WLIR 107.1 FM, or via streaming webcast at www.liducks.com, with Ducks radio voice Chris King calling the play-by-play.
