Bluefish win second straight over Patriots

Bridgewater, NJ – The Bridgeport Bluefish defeated the Somerset Patriots 5-4 before 7,881 fans at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Saturday evening.

The Bluefish took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Third baseman Luis Lopez drew a walk and scored on a two-run home run by first baseman Jesse Hoorelbeke (19).

Somerset cut the lead in half with a run in the bottom of the second inning. Designated hitter Josh Pressley drew a walk and later scored on an RBI groundout by right fielder Ryan Radmanovich.

The Patriots tied up the game with a run in the bottom of the third inning on a solo home run by catcher Jason Belcher (5) to make the score 2-2.

Somerset took a 3-2 lead on a solo home run by third baseman Matt Hagen (12) in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The Patriots added to the lead with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a throwing error.

Bridgeport took the lead with three runs in the top of the sixth inning. Lopez drew a walk and stole second base. Hoorelbeke drew a walk and right fielder Ryan Bear reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases. Left fielder Branden Florence followed with a two run single to plate Lopez and Hoorelbeke. Designated hitter Jay Caliguiri then hit an RBI single to give the Bluefish a 5-4 advantage.

Bridgeport starter Mike Connolly (1-0) picked up the win, allowing four runs, three earned, on four hits in six innings pitched. Patriots starter Jim Magrane (4-7) suffered the loss, allowing five earned runs on six hits in six innings pitched. Eddy Ramos earned his ninth save of the season for Bridgeport.

The 2008 Somerset Patriots season presented by Ford will continue at home on Sunday evening with a 5:05 pm game against the Bridgeport Bluefish. The game includes Autograph Books for the first 2,000 fans in attendance courtesy of Supreme Lithographers.
