The Bridgeport Bluefish were unable to hang on to their lead down stretch as they fell to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 7-5 on Tuesday. The Crabs scored twice in the seventh to tie the game and twice in the eighth to bury Bridgeport. The Bluefish continue to struggle against their Liberty Division foes with 12 losses in 15 meetings as they fall to 12-12 in the second half.

Tommy John's bullpen had issues with the Blue Crabs offense. T.J. Tucker came on in the seventh inning carrying a 5-3 lead. The former Major Leaguer issued a leadoff walk to Eric Crozier before Chris Maples sent a game-tying jack high into the net in left field. Jeff Tam (2-3) gave up the two go-ahead runs in the eighth to take the loss. Tam threw a sacrifice bunt attempt past second baseman Wilson Batista covering first base, allowing Jeremy Owens to score the go-ahead run. Maples tacked on one more run on a sacrifice fly two pitches later to finish the afternoon one-for-three with three RBIs and a run scored. John Ramistella started the scoring for Southern Maryland with a two-run homer in the first and finished two-for-three with two runs.

The Bluefish had a big fourth inning to back the quality start by Sweeney. Alex Prieto cleared the bases with a hard-hit triple down the third-base line into the Blue Crabs bullpen that gave Bridgeport a 3-2 lead. Henry Mateo drove in Prieto with a double two batters later. Prieto finished with four RBIs after blasting a solo home run in the fifth.

Sweeney pitched well in his first start in Bridgeport. The former Newark Bear allowed three runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts over six innings.

Maryland starter Ryan Bicondoa left the game with his team trailing, allowing five runs on seven hits over his five frames. Jason Blanton picked up the victory in relief with a scoreless seventh inning of work. Matt Schweitzer earned his sixth save of 2008 for the Blue Crabs with a scoreless ninth.

The Bluefish turn to Barry Hertzler (5-7) to stop the two-game skid tomorrow night at 7:05 P.M. The Blue Crabs will send southpaw Jon Connolly (3-2) to oppose the 2008 All-Star.
