Bluefish slam the door on Southern Maryland

Bridgeport, CT – June 30th – The Bridgeport Bluefish rattled off their third consecutive victory with a convincing 7-6 win over the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs. The Bluefish scored four in the fifth inning to obtain the lead that was held by a solid night from the bullpen. The Bluefish get back to .500 on the year at 32-32 while the Blue Crabs fall to 31-32.

The play of the night goes to Derrick Ellison. The Bluefish reliever gave up a lead off double to Jeremy Owens entering his second inning of work. After a sacrifice bunt and a pop-up, Ellison blew away Blue Crab catcher Adam Shorsher with a high fastball to work out of the jam. The southpaw reliever also entered the game in a second-and-third-with-no-out situation and allowed a harmless sacrifice fly. Ellison allowed one hit and struck out two in his relief of starter Matt Pike (6-2). Pike lasted five innings and allowed three runs on seven hits with one walk and four strikeouts to pick up the victory.

Seven of the nine Bluefish starters recorded at least one hit on the evening. Henry Mateo (three runs) and Luis Lopez (double, RBI, two runs) both notched three hits a piece while the familiar slugging pair of Jesse Hoorelbeke (two-for-three, two walks) and Jay Caligiuri (one-for-four, double, run) each drove in two runs.

Keith Ramsey (1-3) suffered the loss for the Blue Crabs in his start. The southpaw worked 4.2 innings and allowed five runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. The top of the Southern Maryland order meant trouble for Bridgeport pitching. George Sandel (run), John Ramistella (double, run) and Curtis Pride (RBI) all recorded two hits on the night for the Blue Crabs. Outfielder James Shanks drilled a three-run blast in the fourth inning in his only hit of the night.

The Bluefish will look to make it four straight tomorrow with a start from Tim Drew (3-1). Southern Maryland counters with righty Joe Gannon (3-1). First pitch is 7:05 P.M.
