Blue Crabs snap at Bluefish with big win

Bridgeport, CT – July 2nd – The Bridgeport Bluefish dropped another tough game to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs 13-8 on Wednesday. The 'Fish lose their second straight and wrap up a ten game home stand at 5-5. Bridgeport falls to 32-34 on the season while the Blue Crabs improve to 33-32 with the series victory.

Barry Hertzler (3-5) labored through another harsh outing to make way for the big Blue Crab victory. The Bluefish starter worked four innings and allowed eight runs to cross the plate (seven earned) on nine hits with five walks and one strikeout. Ryan Bicondoa (7-4) picked up the victory with his five innings of work for Southern Maryland. The right-hander allowed four runs on seven hits and four walks with four batters fanned.

Highlights for the Bluefish offense include two separate three-run innings. Bridgeport scored three in the fifth inning capped by a two-run single by team RBI leader Jesse Hoorelbeke (55). The first baseman slapped a Bicondoa pitch up the middle to drive in two of his three RBIs on the night. The Bluefish added three in the seventh on a towering opposite field home run by DH Calvin Pickering. Hoorelbeke finished three-for-five and Luis Lopez reached base safely in all five plate appearances with two base hits and three walks. Henry Mateo finished the game two-for-three with four runs scored. His 57 runs on the season lead the Atlantic League.

Pat Osborn padded his league lead in RBIs (62) with three more on the evening. The Blue Crab infielder finished two-for-five with a sacrifice fly and a bases-loaded two-run single. Chris Maples (one-for-three) and Curtis Pride (two-for-five, double, two runs) also had three RBIs apiece. John Ramistella (two-for-five) scored three runs for Southern Maryland.

The Bluefish head on the road now with a trip to Long Island to close out the first half. Fresh off his best start of the season, Bluefish starter Rafael Bergstrom (4-4) will get the nod on Thursday. Long Island will send Jon Searles (1-2) to the mound to oppose Bergstrom.
