Back and forth battle ends in Bluefish loss

The Bridgeport Bluefish remained pesky all game long, battling back from two-run deficits twice in the game only to fall to the Long Island Ducks 8-7. The first game of a doubleheader was capped by a game-winning solo home run in the eighth inning by Long Island's Rob Cafiero and marks the sixth consecutive loss for Bridgeport.

Bluefish closer Wes Wilkerson twice allowed the go-ahead run to score while pitching in a tie game. Wilkerson came on to pitch in the ninth in a 5-5 tie before giving up a two-run homer to Ray Navarete and then gave up the Cafiero bomb in the eighth.

The Bluefish were able to overcome almost all odds on the night. Bridgeport faced a 5-3 deficit heading into sixth before Calvin Pickering and Brian Munhall drove in a run a piece to tie the game. After Navarete's homer in the top of the inning, the Bluefish headed into the bottom of the seventh and looking at a 7-5 deficit. Henry Mateo scored on a throwing error followed by a Ryan Bear RBI single that tied the game.

Wilkerson (0-2) is charged with the loss, going two innings and allowing three runs on three hits while Joe Valentine (2-1) picks up the win for Long Island going two innings and allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits while walking one and striking out two.

Top offensive stars for the game include Bridgeport's Calvin Pickering who drove in two runs, Luis Lopez who drove in two and scored two, while Long Island's Navarete and Jamal Strong both drove in two runs a piece.

Bridgeport is looking ahead to game two where they send spot-starter Matt Ford to the hill to face Manny Ulloa of Long Island.
