Hamden, CT - Groundbreaking will take place on December 14 at 3 p.m. at 130 Leeder Hill Road in Hamden for a new school that consolidates two special education programs into one location for students served by Area Cooperative Educational Services (ACES).
Silver / Petrucelli + Associates was selected by ACES to lead the design effort for the $60 million project which began with the selection of one of 12 potential sites. Leeder Hill Road, the location of a former charter school, presented the best option in terms of site access, existing building conditions and expansion possibilities for the 141,300 s.f. school.
ACES at Leeder Hill is unique in that it will provide special education to high school students through 21 years of age under one roof. Specialty laboratory programming elements include occupational therapy rooms, sensory and aqua-therapy rooms, gross motor rooms, assistive technology training spaces, as well as vocational programs including art, shop, video studio, etc. The new school is expected to open in the fall of 2019.
“We are very excited to be a part of this project,” says David Stein, AIA, principal architect. “It complements our large educational portfolio with a sensitivity to special needs and unique programming and equipment that are specific to the students served by ACES. We are proud to share ACES’ dedication to creating a school that will enhance the educational opportunities for its students.”
