Mayor Appoints Animal Control Center Task Force

STAMFORD, CT - Stamford Mayor David Martin announced the appointment of the Animal Control Center Task Force following the Human Resources investigation into the Stamford Animal Control Center. The Task Force will hold its first meeting tonight, Monday, June 23, 2014, at 7:00 PM at the Stamford Government Center, 4th Floor, Board of Representatives Republican Caucus Room.
The seven-member Task Force includes community leaders and seasoned professionals in the field of animal control.
“I am pleased to appoint an exceptionally qualified team of professionals and community leaders to serve on the Animal Control Center Task Force. While they are diverse in their backgrounds, all members share a common commitment to promoting both the safety of residents and welfare of animals, and I am looking forward to working with them in the weeks and months to come,” said Mayor David Martin.
The following individuals will serve on the Task Force:
Eileen Heaphy, Co-Chair, Co-Founder of the Stamford Dog Park and Board of Representatives Member (District 8).
Art Layton, Co-Chair, Co-Founder of the Stamford Dog Park and former member of the Board of Representatives (District 17).
Maryann Kleinschmitt, Animal Control Officer, Town of New Canaan.
Annie Selkovits Taylor, Stamford resident, dog owner, Compliance Consultant and member of the Board of Directors of the Animal Cancer Foundation.
Theresa Geary, Director of Operations, Connecticut Humane Society.
Dr. Steve Zeide, Veterinarian and Owner, Bull’s Head Pet Hospital.
Brenden Leydon, Attorney, Tooher Wocl & Leydon LLC.
The Task Force will help to lead the City’s efforts to address the recent issues at the Animal Control Center. Its responsibilities include:
· Reviewing current policies & procedures of the facility, in conjunction with City officials.
· Working with all stakeholders, including residents, interested volunteers, and City officials to ensure that the City maximizes the safety of residents and the welfare of all animals in the facility.
· Making recommendations to the Mayor about potential sites for a new Animal Control Center.
