Janet Peckinpaugh, the Republican candidate for Congress in the 2nd District, took a comprehensive tour of the Naval Submarine Base in Groton Tuesday. Peckinpaugh was accompanied by State Senate Candidate (R) Sean Sullivan (USN-Ret.), the former Commanding Officer of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base.

Prior to her extensive tour of the naval installation, Peckinpaugh met with Captain Marc Denno, the current Commanding Officer, and was given a briefing on the mission and infrastructure initiatives of the Base.

“As one of the largest employers in Southeastern Connecticut it is imperative that we preserve this last operational Naval Base in New England,” said Peckinpaugh.

The Submarine Base in Groton is home to a third of the nation’s attack submarine force. During Peckinpaugh’s visit, signs of a warm welcome for one such sub, the USS Annapolis, were evident.

“Seeing the base, in full operation, first hand, reinforced for me just how vital this military installation is, not only to our state but to our country’s defense.”

Peckinpaugh’s visit came just one month before a landmark event in the Base’s history. October brings the first class of submariners ever to include women to the Naval Submarine School.

“I am so pleased to learn that women will now be included in this integral part of the nation’s defense, and I wish all the brave men and women, both in our submarine service, and in all of our military service, the very best. The continued operation of the base is essential to our nation’s security,” Peckinpaugh said.
