Comments by a leading Democrat Thursday shows voters can expect more misery rather than leadership on deficit reduction, according to Republican State Party Chairman Chris Healy Thursday.

Healy was responding to comments by Dan Malloy, candidate for Governor and State Sen. Eileen Daily, D-Westbrook, the co-chairman of the Finance, Revenue and Bonding Committee, who both speculated on the need to raise more revenue next year. Malloy was quoted as saying local cities and towns should be allowed to raise revenue aside from the local property taxes while Daily believed an increase in the sales tax will “be on the table.”

“Democrats can’t help themselves, whenever there is trouble, their first answer is make someone else pay,” said Healy. “Malloy is used to raising taxes in Stamford and Daily won’t even put up a fight to keep taxpayer’s safe.”

Rather than offer any spending or repudiate the Democrat’s recent budget, Malloy now wants to have local taxpayers cough up more of their hard earned money to fund government at the local and state level.

“How will Connecticut be competitive if Dan Malloy’s first answer is to allow Mayors and First Selectmen to shake down hard working families with another round of taxes,” said Healy. “It’s incredible. Dan Malloy doesn’t realize that Connecticut’s taxpayers are done with higher taxes and spending.”

"Raising the sales tax, which is slightly lower than neighboring states, will give away one reason for people to shop or invest in Connecticut. In addition, an increase in sales tax hurts those in lower income groups more than others," Healy said.

“If there was ever a reason to vote Republican, Dan Malloy and Eileen Daily made it perfectly clear by their statements,” said Healy. “Vote Democrat and everything you buy will be more expensive or wait for another tax bill from city hall.”
