Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital appoints Breast Health Navigator
Maureen Major Campos
Maureen Major Campos, RN, MS, of Norwalk,-- a nationally-recognized oncology nurse -- has been named the Breast Health Navigator for the Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital, according to Richard Zelkowitz, MD, medical director.

"Maureen is compassionate and caring and will be an asset to the Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital," Dr. Zelkowitz said. "She has a great deal of experience in providing advanced nursing care and education to breast cancer patients," he added. The goal of the Smilow Family Breast Health Center is to offer guidance and support for women as they cope with abnormal findings -- whether or not they prove to be malignant -- as well as to provide community education on the importance of screening for early detection. Ms. Major will help women navigate through the breast diagnostic work-up process and collaborate with other medical disciplines, when necessary, such as radiation medicine, pathology, the Whittingham Cancer Center, support services, etc. The goal of the Smilow Family Breast Health Center is to offer patients ongoing support and connect them with all needed services in order to provide a definitive diagnosis as rapidly as possible.

Ms. Major was previously associated with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for 13 years. She was the Clinical Nurse Specialist with Memorial Sloan Kettering's Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center in New York, NY. In this role, she provided comprehensive care to breast cancer patients including symptom management and triage, patient education and protocol coordination. She worked on numerous initiatives to facilitate improved outcomes for patients receiving care at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. In 1999, she was the Cancer Center's recipient of the "Excellence in Advance Practice Nursing Award".

She previously worked for Caremark, Inc., in Plainview, NY, as an oncology program manager and prior to that as the Clinical Coordinator of Home Health Services for Caremark.

Ms. Major was also associated with New York Hospital Cornell Medical Center, where was the Nurse Manager of the Adoptive Immunotherapy Clinical Research Trial, after working in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit. She was previously an assistant head nurse in the General Surgical Unit at Westchester County Medical Center.

After receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in nursing from Villanova University, Villanova, PA, she was awarded her Master of Science degree in nursing from Columbia University, New York, NY. She is a member of Sigma Theta Tau.

A member of the Oncology Nursing Society, Ms. Major has published articles on breast cancer treatment options and bone marrow transplants in scientific journals and provides time for local and national lectures. She was an associate of ONS Online, the official website of the Oncology Nursing Society.
