The New York Islanders announced Friday morning that they have recalled Jesse Joensuu from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League. The Bridgeport Sound Tigers also announced Friday morning that they have signed defenseman Wes O’Neill and forwards Olivier Labelle and Chris Blight to professional tryout contracts (PTO’s).
A 6-4, 207-pound forward, Joensuu has notched 11 points (4g/7a) in 16 games with the Sound Tigers in the early part of the 2010-11 season. The Pori, Finland native has appeared in 18 NHL games spanning the last two seasons, recording two goals and two assists. The 23-year-old forward was a second round draft pick (60th overall) of the Islanders in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
O’Neill, 24, started this season with the Kalamazoo Wings of the ECHL. O’Neill wore the “C” for the Sound Tigers’ ECHL affiliate, and over 13 games the 6-4, 215-pound defenseman tallied two goals and one assist. The Essex, ONT native spent the last three seasons in the Colorado Avalanche system, appearing in five NHL games over the last two years.
Labelle and Blight come to the Sound Tigers after beginning this season with the ECHL's Reading Royals. A 6-0, 199-pound forward, Labelle played in eight games for the Sound Tigers during the 2007-08 season and scored one goal. The St. Eustache, PQ native has spent the majority of the last three seasons in the ECHL. Last season, he tallied 41 points (23g/18a) in 55 games with Reading, as well as 11 goals in 16 postseason contests.
Blight, 28, has experience in both the ECHL and AHL. Last season, the 6-0. 190-pound forward played in Denmark. In addition to his ECHL experience that includes two 50-point seasons, the Cambridge, ONT native has appeared in games with Worcester, Manitoba, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and Albany.
