Matt Correntte had a goal and an assist and Mike McKenna made 28 saves as the Lowell Devils held off the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the Arena at Harbor Yard. Greg Mauldin had a goal and an assist for the Sound Tigers.
Corrente put the Devils on top early on tallying his third goal of the year at the 1:39 mark of the first period. Corrente took a pass from Patrick Davis and fired a blast from the point that beat a screened Scott Munroe.
The Sound Tigers executed a perfect 3-on-2 rush to tie the game at the 6:48 mark of the first. Sean Bentivoglio sent Micheal Haley into the offensive zone and Haley fired a shot on net. McKenna made the save but the rebound landed right on Mauldin's stick, and he snapped home a quick shot for his team leading seventh goal of the year.
Lowell dominated the second period, out-shooting the Sound Tigers 16-5. The Devils scored two power-play goals, one early and one late in the stanza, for a 3-1 lead. Nathan Perkovich put the Devils ahead 15 seconds in, cleaning up a rebound after a shot by Ben Walter. With 2:02 left, Nick Palmieri dumped the puck into the offensive zone and the Devils chased it. The puck took a strange carom off the board and ended up on the stick of Michael Swift, who snapped a shot past an unsuspecting Munroe for his third goal of the year.
Trevor Smith brought the Sound Tigers within one with 32 seconds left. Mauldin fed Smith a pass from behind the net to the right face-off circle and Smith snapped a shot that snuck just inside the right post for his sixth goal of the year.
The Devils out-shot the Sound Tigers 37-30. Munroe made 33 saves in the losing effort.
