Western Connecticut Health Network Offers Fitness, Stroke Prevention, Smoking Cessation and Prostate Cancer Awareness Programs

DANBURY, CT - New Milford Hospital will offer Strong Women™ Strong Bones (SWSB) fitness classes on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays *August 28 through October 13 (*choose two classes within the same week) from 10 to 11:15 am, and on Tuesdays and Thursdays at Saint Andrews Church located at 1 North Main Street in Kent, August 29 through October 12 from 10 to 11:15 am. Classes will be led by certified instructor Lisa Maria Lee.

SWSB is a nationally recognized fitness program designed to prevent and reverse osteoporosis/osteopenia and promote general health and wellness. Health and wellness benefits include arthritis relief, restoration of balance and flexibility, strengthening of bones, proper weight maintenance, and improved glucose control and heart health. A six-week smoking cessation program will take place at Norwalk Hospital beginning Wednesday, September 6. Classes start at 6 pm and take place in the 3rd floor Pulmonary Department classroom. Norwalk Hospital’s smoking cessation program facilitators are Beverly Jacoby, RRT and Cheri Webesky, CRT. The program is free and open to the public. A Community Health Forum will be held at New Milford Hospital on Wednesday, September 20 at 6 pm. Featured speaker will be Karen Mulvihill, DNP, APRN, FNP, ACHPN, Director of Palliative Care Services for Western Connecticut Health Network. She will discuss Palliative Care – What is it? Who benefits? How, when to implement it?

For $8.50, community residents can enjoy a healthy and affordable meal prior to the program created by New Milford Hospital’s Award winning Plow to Plate Program® in partnership with Unidine Corporation. The program takes place in the Robison Conference Room at New Milford Hospital located at 21 Elm Street in New Milford. Registration is preferred. For information and to register, call 860-210-5302.

“Stroke: Prevention, Symptoms and Treatment” will be discussed as part of the “To Your Health!” series at Meadow Ridge senior living community in Redding during the upcoming health education series presented by Meadow Ridge and Western Connecticut Health Network. The program, presented free of charge as a community service, will be held on Tuesday, September 26, at 7 pm. The featured speaker is Joshua Marcus, MD, a neurosurgeon on the medical staff of Western Connecticut Health Network who is in practice with Neurosurgical Associates of Southwestern CT.

Meadow Ridge is located at 100 Redding Road in Redding. Anyone interested in attending this program may register by calling 1-866-337-6640.

On Thursday, September 28, The C. Anthony and Jean Whittingham Cancer Center at Norwalk Hospital is partnering with the American Cancer Society to present a special program to promote prostate cancer awareness, prevention, screening, treatment options and the latest research. The panel discussion features physician experts Jonathan Bernie, MD, Urologist, Richard Frank, MD, Medical Oncologist and Pradip Pathare, MD, Radiation Oncology.

A light dinner will be served at 5:30 pm, and the program will take place from 6 to 7:30 pm in the Perkin Auditorium at Norwalk Hospital. Reservations can be made by contacting Michelle Dailey, LMFT at michelle.dailey@whcn.org, or call 203-852-2174.
