Norwalk’s City Hall has joined the sites for Cupcakes for a Cause to make life a little sweeter for children whose lives have been affected by cancer. Mayor Richard Moccia is to proclaim Sept. 24 “Cupcakes for a Cause Day” at City Hall as a nationally-inspired campaign unfolds at 18 locations Sept. 20-26 across Connecticut, up from 10 last year. A number are supporters from past years.
Proceeds fund the counseling and support services of CancerCare for
Kids through Norwalk-based CancerCare of Connecticut.
Said Mayor Moccia: “Everyone deserves a treat, but the enduring reward is in helping kids with special needs and concerns.”
The fundraiser at Norwalk City Hall 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 24 has been collaboratively mobilized by Purchasing Assistant Karen Kelsey and City Clerk Ellen Wink.
Kelsey is a cancer survivor and enthusiastically appreciative of the support given her family by CancerCare of Connecticut, especially in encouraging her grandchildren—Matthew Solerti, 7, and his brother Ryan, 4—to understand the implications of treatment and the power of hope.
“Using wooden spoons,” Kelsey recalls, “the kids created puppets to represent me. The puppets made it easier for them to express their thoughts and fears.”
In the atrium at City Hall, Kelsey and Wink plan to set up a table brimming with tasty cupcakes—decorated with a smiling face logo--and other pastries. Other volunteers intend to offer handcrafted jewelry for sale in the same area, donating proceeds to CancerCare of Connecticut.
Kelsey says the work is extremely meaningful. “People with cancer—and their families--need to stay positive, know they are not alone and that therapy is available.”
Adds Wink: “The cause is worth the calories.”
