The comprehensive training sessions to be held at Congregation Beth El, 109 East Avenue, Norwalk will begin on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. Continuing for seven weeks, the sessions will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays every week through to the week of March 12, 2013. The Elayne and James Schoke Home Companion Training Program consists of forty hours of class work and testing over a seven week period. Taught by Isrella Knopf, MSW, Director of Senior Services, eligible participants must pass a criminal background check and a medical physical before completing the training program. In addition, applicants must present three written references, a social security card or non-resident ID. If they are a driver, they must present a driver’s license, car registration and car insurance. All prospective students must speak English fluently. An interview will be required before admittance to the training program. The enrollment fee is $32 for a training manual and administrative costs. The content of the program covers issues such as nutrition, socialization and medical situations confronted by the home companion. Classes include guest lecturers speaking about specific situations such as hearing and visual impairments. Potential aides must perform successfully on tests administered throughout the seven week period. Successful completion of the coursework and testing will result in a trainee being placed on the JFS Home Companion registry. He/she will then be eligible for placement in a home companion situation.
