A Breast Cancer Survivor Fashion Show, presented by the Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital, will be the highlight of the activities planned for “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” at the Stamford Town Center. The "Go Fight Breast Cancer....Celebrate Life Fashion Show” will take place on Sunday, October 5, beginning at 2:00 p.m. in The Grand Court of the Stamford Town Center.

All the models are inspiring Norwalk Hospital breast cancer survivors who will be wearing the latest fashions generously donated by stores at the Stamford Town Center. Holly Pivor of Weston, a breast cancer survivor and dedicated volunteer, is the coordinator of the Fashion Show, with the mall’s Marketing Assistant, Kristen LoVullo.

The Masters of Ceremony for the show -- Dr. Richard Zelkowitz of Westport, and Maureen Major Campos, RN, MS of Norwalk – will introduce the models. Dr. Zelkowitz is the medical director of the Smilow Family Breast Health Center, and Ms. Major has recently joined the Breast Health Center as breast health specialist.

Specializing in the treatment of breast cancer, Dr. Zelkowitz is admired and loved by his patients, many of whom will be participating in the Fashion Show as models. Ms. Major, a nationally recognized oncology nurse and member of the Oncology Nursing Society, is the author of articles on breast cancer treatment options and bone marrow transplants. She was previously with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center for 13 years as the clinical nurse specialist.

The public will be invited to the center court to talk with the survivors following the fashion show. “We are inspired by these women,” said Ms. Major. “They are truly models for all of us. As these courageous women are introduced they will model the latest fashions while sharing their compelling stories about living with and surviving cancer,” she added.

Among the stores in the Stamford Town Center that have volunteered to assist with the Fashion Show by providing fashionable outfits to the models include: Talbots, J. Jill, Coldwater Creek, Cach?, Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Saks and Macy’s. Each retailer will donate the outfits to each model. In addition, each survivor will receive a gift package from the mall with items donated by Solstice, Lindt Chocolate, Hallmark Gold Crown, Cosi, Crabtree & Evelen, PF Changs China Bistro, Mitchell’s Fish Market, Kona Grill, California Pizza Kitchen, Victoria Secret, The Body Shop and Gelato Giuliana. MAC Cosmetics is donating its services to provide make-up for all the models. The Capital Grille, the mall’s newest outdoor restaurant in the mall’s Plaza, will be hosting a private reception in honor of the breast cancer survivors. During the event, entertainment will be provided by former New York Philharmonic pianist, Val Ratner.

In addition to the Fashion Show, in observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The Smilow Family Breast Health Center at Norwalk Hospital will also have information on breast health on display at the Stamford Town Center for the week of October 5th. The Fashion Show is being held during Breast Cancer Awareness Month to heighten awareness of breast health through education, according to Dr. Zelkowitz.

This year, it is said that about 182,460 women in the United States will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. Right now, there are approximately 2 million women living in the United States who have been treated for breast cancer. Women who are at a higher risk for breast cancer are those with a strong family history of breast cancer, those of advancing age and those with a prior breast biopsy.

The good news is that breast cancer death rates have been going down and this is probably the result of earlier detection and improved treatment, according to the American Cancer Society.

Other activities being held during breast cancer awareness month include:

• Thursday, October 2, 2008 – 2008 International Wine Tasting and Auction Breast Health Benefit sponsored by the Darien Chamber of Commerce at Nielsen’s Greenhouse and Gardens, 1405 Post Road, Darien, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.

• Wednesday, October 8, 2008 – “Breast Health and Menopause” by Maureen Major Campos, RN, MS, breast health specialist, Smilow Family Breast Health Center, 7:00 p.m. in the Richard S. Perkin Auditorium, Norwalk Hospital. This is part of the Red Hot Mama’s free education series.
