The Greens at Cannondale in Wilton and Norwalk Hospital are presenting a community health lecture series at The Greens as a public service. The first program in the series is on exercise on Tuesday, April 7th. The topic is "The Wonders of Exercise" by Brian A. Bast, DO, physiatrist with Coastal Orthopaedics, and a member of the Medical Staff at Norwalk Hospital.
Dr. Bast will discuss how important it is to exercise to keep our bodies healthy and our bones strong. While shedding light on problems that can develop from a lack of exercise, he will also caution people to consult their physicians before starting an exercise plan. The program will conclude with a question and answer session.
Dr. Bast specializes in non-surgical sports and spine rehabilitation and is a member of Coastal Orthopaedics of Norwalk, Darien and Westport. Dr. Bast was awarded his B.A. degree, cum laude, from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster, PA, where he became a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He completed his D.O. degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Philadelphia, PA.
After completing his rotating internship within the Saint Barnabas Medical Center system in Livingston, NJ, he moved to New York City to pursue his residency training in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at The Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, NY. While at Mount Sinai, he spent elective training time in Palo Alto, CA with the Stanford Cross Country team learning about the conditioning and rehabilitation of elite runners. After residency, he completed a Fellowship in Sports and Spine Rehabilitation in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Beth Israel Medical Center, which is renowned for its operative and non-operative approach to spine conditions, as well as general orthopedics. In recent years Beth Israel has been associated with the New York Knicks and the New York Liberty. While at Beth Israel, Dr. Bast participated in the spine care of the New York Yankees and the overall care of the New York Women's Rugby team. Dr. Bast is trained in the latest non-surgical treatments for spine care including epidural spine injections and radiofrequency neurotomy.
He has been a guest lecturer and successfully published on topics relating to hip fracture and interventional spine procedures. He has also lectured to young swimmers regarding shoulder conditioning for better swimming, most recently to the Flying Dolphins Swim Team at the 92nd Street Y in NYC. He has been a medical volunteer for rugby tournaments, marathons, football games, as well as swimming and diving championships.
He is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a member of the International Spine Injection Society. Upcoming topics:
James R. Cook, LCSW of Westport, a social worker at Norwalk Hospital, will present a program on anxiety on April 14th. He will explain why people have anxiety and how to identify the symptoms and cope with anxiety disorders. The health lecture on April 21st is on "Protecting Your Memory" by Amy M. Knorr, MD, Ph.D., a Norwalk Hospital neurologist who is with Neurology Associates of Norwalk. On May 5th, the topic will be "Dealing with Difficult People" by David Cross, LCSW, Social Worker, Norwalk Hospital, who has been very successful in leading anger management programs. He will present tools, tactics and techniques to help you turn negative situations into positive ones. On May 12th, "Love and Intimacy After 65" is the topic that will be presented by Thomas V. Ayoub, MD, obstetrician and gynecologist with Women's Healthcare of New England.
Vittoria Gassman, MD, internist and geriatrician, Norwalk Hospital, will explain that "Getting Older Isn't for Sissies" on May 19th. She will discuss health issues that need to be addressed as we age, how to lead a healthy life and how we can enjoy growing older. On June 2, "Solutions for Knee and Hip Pain" will be the topic to be discussed by Michael R. Marks, MD, MBA, orthopaedic surgeon, Coastal Orthopaedics and Chief of the Medical Staff at Norwalk Hospital. He will explain what osteoarthritis is and discuss treatments available both non-operatively and operatively including total hip and total knee replacements. On June 9th, "All about Allergies" will be presented by Marvin Den, MD, allergist, The Norwalk Medical Group. He will discuss the many different allergies people get, the symptoms, causes and treatment. Sandra Wainwright, MD, medical director of the Wound Care and Hyperbaric Center at Norwalk Hospital, will discuss "Chronic Wounds" on Tuesday, June 16th. She will focus on causes, prevention and treatment.
