Stamford, CT - Stamford Public Schools (SPS) announced that three Academy of Information Technology & Engineering (AITE) students, four Stamford High School (SHS) students and three Westhill High School (WHS) students were recently recognized for their outstanding submissions in the 2019 Connecticut Regional Scholastic Art & Writing Awards program. As an affiliate of the National Scholastic Art Awards and The Alliance For Young Artists and Writers, this national program honors the creative efforts of students in grades 7 to 12, who attend public, private and parochial schools.

Students earn Gold Key, Silver Key or Honorable Mention Awards in each of 29 categories judged by artists, university faculty, professional novelists, editors, teachers and other professionals in the related field. According to the organization, this is now the largest and most senior program of its type in the country. The following SPS students earned awards for their artistic contributions:

• Dechante Clarke, SHS: Gold Key, Drawing and Illustration (Teacher: Paul Cusano)

• Maggie Meister, SHS: Gold Key, Photography (Teacher: Module Downer)

• Nathan Yao, AITE: 2 Gold Keys and an Honorable Mention, Digital Art (Teacher: Darin Tomaszewski)

• Khalil Briscoe, SHS: Silver Key, Digital Art (Teacher: Erika Arconti-Galassi)

• Melanie Brito, WHS: Silver Key, Photography (Teacher: Tamara Dilworth)

• Charlotte Saunders, SHS: Honorable Mention, Photography (Teacher: Paul Cusano)

• Wendy Avila, WHS: Honorable Mention, Drawing and Illustration (Teacher: Elizabeth Moncure)

• Joaquin Monteclaro, WHS: Honorable Mention, Digital Art (Teacher: Mathew DiGiovannaIt)

The following students earned recognition for literary work in The 2019 Hudson-to-Housatonic Region Scholastic Writing Awards, administered by Writopia Lab:

• Isabella DeCicco, AITE: Gold Key, Short Story (Teacher: Edward Donnelly)

• Pamela Wharmby, AITE: Honorable Mention, Short Story (Teacher: Edward Donnelly)

Judges selected 787 art awardees from approximately 3,000 total art entries for exhibit. The writing award judges selected works that demonstrated originality, technical skill and the emergence of a personal voice or vision from among 2,009 submissions.
