Coventry, CT - Over a century has passed since the last baseball game was played at the Nathan Hale Homestead, but two teams will take the field once again on Saturday, June 30th at 1 pm! Connecticut Landmarks is excited to welcome the Bouckville Summits and the Providence Grays, two teams from the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League, to the Homestead’s playing field. Hay bales will mark the field used by the Coventry Farmers’ Market every Sunday, and the name of this game is authenticity – the rules, uniforms, bats and balls will be true to 1864.

Both team names are derived from documented teams of the 1860s. The game will use hand stitched balls, pitchers are known as hurlers, batters are called strikers, and the bats used are heavier and longer than modern ones. This will be a gentlemen’s game – cursing results in a 25¢ fine and an apology to the spectators. Everyone will respect the umpire, and never challenge him, because he’s also the town minister. So gather your history buffs, sports enthusiasts, and lawn chairs to join us for this family fun event – and if the players want to roll up their sleeves, they’ll have to ask you first!

Be sure to bring your lawn chairs to the Vintage Base Ball Game for this double-header. Games typically last 1.5 to 2.5 hours each. Concessions available for purchase. $10 per person. Registration recommended at 860.742.6917 or hale@ctlandmarks.org.

The Nathan Hale Homestead is located at 2299 South Street in Coventry, CT 06238 and is open for regular tours from May through October. For hours or more information, visit www.ctlandmarks.org, email hale@ctlandmarks.org, or call (860) 742-6917.
