Two artists from Fairfield County have won awards in the prestigious Faber Biren Color Award Show at the Stamford Art Association Gallery.

Marie Lynch, of Wilton, CT, won fifth place for her collage entitled "Seal 001." She will receive the $200 Joyce and Bob Jones Award.

Lisa Thoren, of Darien, CT, won sixth place for her silk screen entitled "Wading." She will receive the $100 Joyce and Bob Jones Award.

Other awards went to Ellen Mason, of Sarasota, FL; Vicky Ryer, of Salem, MA; Donna Thomas, of Mount Laurel, NJ; and Ethel Reneck, of Pound Ridge, NY.

Commenting on the selection, the juror, Nora Rockwell Lawrence, curatorial assistant at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, said, "I was interested in both finding the most intriguing works of art and paying tribute to the myriad ways in which color is used in contemporary art today."

Endowed by the family and friends of world renowned color consultant Faber Birren, the annual high-profile National Color Award Show opens September 28 at the Stamford Art Association Gallery to celebrate creative expressions of color.

"Color is simply the greatest show on earth," Birren once said.

A Stamford resident for 50 years, Birren (1900-1988) spent his professional career focused on the artistic impact of color and the human response to it. Trained at the Art Institute of Chicago, Birren went on to distinguish himself as a world-famous color consultant and author of 25 books and some 260 articles on color.

Among his clients were Walt Disney Studios, the U.S. Navy, the U.S. Army, the U. S. Coast Guard, DuPont, House and Garden Magazine, and Stamford’s Aid for the Retarded, where he offered expertise on visual, physiological, and psychological reactions to color. His collection of books on color is at the Yale University Library.

Stamford’s annual Color Show has grown from a regional exhibit to one that is now national in scope, encouraging artists in all media.

"In some of the works of art in this exhibition, color is a vehicle for representation. In others, it invites the viewer to contemplate color as an end in itself. The exhibition wonderfully demonstrates the powerful resonance of color across several different artistic mediums," Lawrence said.

Awards will be given at the opening reception on Sunday, September 28, 4 – 6 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The show will run through Thursday, November 6.

Established in 1971, the Stamford Art Association is a nonprofit organization whose members include painters, sculptors, printmakers, and photographers. Its mission is to provide a forum where artists can exhibit their work and compete in juried shows.

Annual competitions have attracted prominent jurors from art institutions in New York and surrounding areas, including the Whitney Museum, Bruce Museum, and Museum of Modern Art.

The Stamford Art Association is located at 39 Franklin Street (off Broad Street). Gallery hours are Thursday and Friday (11 a.m. – 3 p.m.) and weekends (12 p.m. – 3 p.m.). Admission is free. For more information, call 203.325.1139 or visit www.stamfordartassociation.org.
