Groups will be led through the gallery by resident art historian, Danielle Cavanna, who holds a masters degree in Art History from Boston University, with a specialization in Modern and Contemporary Art, and an Art in Education masters from Harvard University. Gallery Talks are offered Monday-Saturday, 9:30am – 7:00pm and run approximately one hour, though shorter or longer visits can be arranged. Gallery talks can also include a hands-on art activity that relate to the themes of the exhibition. Tours are $10 per adult for a gallery talk and $15 per adult for a gallery talk and 30-minute art activity. Talks are limited to a small group to ensure a more personal learning environment. The Westport Arts Center will debut its new outreach program, “WAC in a BOX” for participants who may not be able to come to the Arts Center. A professional art educator will bring art materials and images from the Arts Center’s current exhibition to schools and community organizations and will lead a guided discussion that encourages visitors of all ages and abilities to directly discuss, examine, and interpret works of contemporary art. Groups can schedule visits Monday through Friday between 10am-5:00pm. Visits run approximately one hour and cost $5 per child and $10 per adult. Scholarships are available. Now in its fourth season, Connections, an art-education outreach initiative benefiting underserved students in nearby urban communities, will expand its program offering this year. During Connections students from participating schools learn an art form under the tutelage of teaching artists within their school classroom. Westport Arts Center teaching artists work with students to explore and create art using the artist’s “focus” materials and techniques. In addition to providing artists-in-residence for partner schools, the Westport Arts Center offers bus transportation for school-groups to visit the Westport Arts Center Gallery. These school-group visits enable students to “experience” a contemporary art exhibition and apply the skills they have learned in their workshops to examining and interpreting art from their own unique perspectives. WAC will exhibit the art resulting from the Connections program in two student art showcases in October 2008 and January 2009 at the WAC gallery on 51 Riverside Avenue, allowing the students to highlight their work and their parents and friends a chance to honor their efforts. WAC’s education programs are supported with funds from the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, the Bank of American Charitable Foundation, and the Xerox Foundation. The Westport Arts Center is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating arts experiences that contribute to individual growth and enrich the community. The Westport Arts Center is supported with funds from The Artur and Heida Hermanns Holde Foundation, Inc., Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism, Connecticut Light & Power, Fairfield County Bank, Gault, Inc., Main Street Resources, U.S. Trust, Bank of America Private Wealth Management, and Westport Resources.
