Some of Fairfield County’s finest artists will receive cash awards during an opening reception for the 24th Mavis Fenner Memorial Juried All-Media Exhibit at the Rowayton Arts Center from 4:00-6:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 5. The awards will be presented by Mavis Fenner’s daughter, artist Virginia Bates, and entertainment will be provided by Fenner’s grandson, David Bates, and Peter Lewis, who are professional musicians. The RAC gallery at 145 Rowayton Avenue is open from 12:00-5:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and from 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is free. The exhibit will continue through November 9.

Mavis Fenner and her husband, Ward, were involved with the Rowayton Arts Center from its beginning in 1960. Following her husband’s death in 1973, Fenner became RAC’s curator, retiring at 82 because of injuries she suffered in an automobile accident.

Virginia Bates says, “Mother spent some of the happiest years of her life at the Rowayton Arts Center. She loved artists and they loved her. She was the great encourager of all time and she made every visitor to the Arts Center feel totally at home. She adored openings and would have been thrilled to know that she would be remembered through an annual juried show that spotlights works by RAC members and non-members.”

The exhibit juror will be artist/art historian Dolores Gall, who worked at Yale University for more than 25 years, giving tours at the University Art Gallery, working at the British Art Center and at the Yale School of Architecture. Gall was responsible for two exhibitions at Yale’s Peabody Museum of Natural History and currently is an Associates Council volunteer at the museum. She is the longtime president of the New Haven Paint & Clay Club and has had several solo exhibits of her work.

Located in the heart of Rowayton on the scenic banks of the Five Mile River, the Rowayton Arts Center was founded in 1960 as a non-profit organization whose purpose is to exhibit the work of creative people in the area, offer classes for artists of all levels, serve as a community cultural center and create an environment for the exchange of arts-related ideas.
