This cool annual event – a wintertime tradition for many – encourages communities to come together to jump into an icy cold lake or ocean to support Special Olympics athletes. Penguin Plunge events feature a fun and festive atmosphere. In addition to the excitement of the plunge, there’s music, refreshments, awards and parades of plungers in costume to enjoy. All are invited to participate, including individuals and families, and teams representing schools, businesses, organizations and clubs. Preregistration is strongly encouraged and may be done at www.soct.org. Those who sign up, can fundraise online to earn great incentive prizes and awards. Registration packets will also be mailed upon request. Call 203-230-1201 or email specialolympicsct@soct.org to find out more. Day-off registrants will be welcomed at all Plunge events, as will spectators. Following are Penguin Plunge dates, locations and times: Madison Penguin Plunge on Saturday, February 9th at Hammonasset Beach State Park. Registration: 10 a.m.; Plunge: noon. Winsted Penguin Plunge on Saturday, February 9th at Highland Lake. Registration: 10 a.m.; Plunge: noon. New London Penguin Plunge on Sunday, February 17th at Ocean Beach Park. Registration: 10 a.m.; Plunge: noon. Middletown Penguin Plunge on Saturday, February 23rd at Crystal Lake. Registration: 10 a.m.; Plunge: noon. Westport Penguin Plunge on Saturday, March 9th at Compo Beach. Registration: 11 a.m.; Plunge: 1 p.m. Danbury Penguin Plunge on Saturday, March 23rd at Candlewood Lake Park.
