Spring turkey hunting season is just around the corner, beginning April 28 through May 29, 2010 and the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) today announced two upcoming Wild Turkey Hunting Safety Seminars scheduled for Saturday, March 13, 2010, and Saturday, March 20, 2010. These annual events are coordinated by the DEP Wildlife Division’s Conservation Education/Firearms Safety (CE/FS) Program and the public is invited to attend. Both programs are offered free-of-charge.

"Both experienced and first-time turkey hunters stand to benefit from these seminars. With the emphasis on providing A-Z hunting information, including safe hunting practices, specialized equipment, calls, site setup, and other strategies for harvesting turkeys, the seminar has valuable information for every participant," said Charles Bruckerhoff, Coordinator of the CE/FS Program.

The March 13 seminar is scheduled for 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM (longer if needed) at the Fairfield County Fish and Game Protective Association, 310 Hammertown Road, in Monroe, Connecticut. Participants for this seminar may bring their own shotgun and the ammunition that they intend to use to hunt turkeys to pattern their shotguns on site.
The second seminar, on March 20, will be offered at Cabela’s in East Hartford from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. Participants should NOT bring their own shotguns and ammunition to the seminar at Cabela’s because there is no shooting range on site.

Interested individuals must register for either of the two seminars by contacting the DEP Wildlife Division’s Sessions Woods office at 860-675-8130, Monday through Friday, from
8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.

A third wild turkey hunting seminar will take place on Saturday, March 27, 2010, from 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM (longer if needed) at the Bozrah Rod and Gun Club, 79 Santa Anna Road, in Lebanon. A fee of $5.00 per person will be charged for this event. Participants for this seminar may bring their own shotgun and the ammunition that they intend to use to hunt turkeys to pattern their shotguns on site. Interested individuals must register for the Bozrah Rod and Gun Club seminar by contacting Warren Speh at 860-536-6640 or sptsmnwgs@juno.com.
Presenters include certified volunteer CE/FS instructors, Ray Hanley, Gary Bennett (also a member of Quaker Boy Call Company), Del DelMastro, Warren Speh, and DEP Wildlife Division biologists, Michael Gregonis and Peter Picone. All presenters have extensive turkey hunting experience.
