Sunday Symposium speakers will be Dalton Conley, New York University professor; Peter Filichia, theatre critic; and Paul Levinson, author and Fordham University professor. The Playhouse Sunday Symposium program, free and open to the public, provides the audience with guest speakers’ in-depth insights and observations about the production, followed by an interactive dialogue. Debra Baron, Westport Country Playhouse education director, will moderate the Sunday Symposium. It is open to all, including those who attend a performance of “The Pavilion” at another time. The Sunday Symposium is supported, in part, by the White Barn Program of the Lucille Lortel Foundation. Paul Levinson’s books include "Cellphone: The Story of the World's Most Mobile Medium" (2004) and "The Plot to Save Socrates" (a novel) (2006). He has appeared on CBS, ABC, Fox News, PBS, MSNBC, CNN, CNBC, The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, CSPAN, NPR, the BBC and the CBC, and is frequently quoted as a media expert in The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times and by AP and Reuters. He reviews television and politics on his InfiniteRegress.tv blog, and is professor and chair of communication and media studies, Fordham University, New York City. Peter Filichia is a theatre critic in print for The Star-Ledger in Newark, and on television for News 12 New Jersey. Then he wrote a daily column, "Theatergoer’s Diary," for Theatre.com and BroadwayOnLine.com. He served four terms as president and chairman of the nominating committee of the Drama Desk, the New York Association of Drama Critics, for which he wrote and emceed its annual Drama Desk Awards. He is a member of the nominating committee for the Lucille Lortel Awards, and is president of the Theatre World Awards, whose ceremony he writes and hosts each spring. In addition, he has written the liner notes for many Broadway cast albums; is the critic-in-residence for the University of Cincinnati-Conservatory of Music; annually serves on the ASCAP Popular Awards Panel; and has appeared on “Sally Jessy Raphael,” “Phil Donahue,” and “Saturday Night Live.” Dalton Conley is director of New York University’s Center for Advanced Social Science Research and professor of sociology and public policy. He wrote” The Pecking Order- a look at how family and society determine who we become.” A masterful blend of comedy and drama, “The Pavilion” is about Peter and Kari, the Class of 1988’s Cutest Senior Couple. In high school, it seemed like everything in the universe worked to make their happiness possible. But at the end of senior year, Kari got pregnant and Peter ran off. Two decades later, the two have not seen each other since the day Peter left…and now he’s come to their 20th high school reunion to get her back. Directed by Chad Rabinovitz, Playhouse artistic associate, the production will run from May 13 through May 31. “The Pavilion” board of trustees sponsor is Joanne Woodward. The Playhouse is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization. Subscriptions for the 2008 season are now on sale, offering discounted prices and preferred, renewable seating. Single tickets range from $30 to $55; opening night tickets, including post-performance reception, are $65. Students and educators are eligible for 50% discounts. Celebrating its 78th season, the venerable Westport Country Playhouse (Joanne Woodward and Anne Keefe, Artistic Directors; Jodi Schoenbrun Carter, Managing Director) is creating innovative new works and dynamic revivals. The Playhouse has produced more than 700 plays, 36 of which later transferred to Broadway including “Come Back, Little Sheba” with Shirley Booth; “The Trip to Bountiful” with Lillian Gish; “Butterflies Are Free” with Keir Dullea and Blythe Danner; “Absurd Person Singular” with Sandy Dennis, Geraldine Page and Tony Roberts; and “Our Town” with Paul Newman. The list of actors, directors, and other theatre artists who have worked and continue to perform on the Playhouse’s legendary stage reads like a "Who's Who" of the American theatre. Following a multi-million dollar renovation completed in 2005, the Playhouse now produces year-round, welcoming 85,000 audience members annually. In addition to a full season of theatrical productions, the Playhouse presents educational programming and workshops; a children’s theatre series; symposiums; music; films; and readings of short fiction, classical works and new plays. Westport Country Playhouse serves as a treasured home for the theatrical arts, its audiences and its artists. For the State of Connecticut, it is a true cultural landmark.
