Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz is encouraging voters today to make sure they are registered to vote for August 12th primaries in Connecticut. Voters have one week from today, until August 11th at noon to register for the primaries in person at their town offices. Registration forms sent by mail must be postmarked no later than August 7th in order to be processed in time for the primaries. In addition, registration forms delivered to town offices by anyone other than the voter must be turned in no later than August 7th in order to be eligible to vote in the primaries.

“It’s decision time in Connecticut,” said Bysiewicz, “We are expecting a record turnout of 90% for our November general elections, so I strongly urge voters to go to the polls Tuesday August 12th to choose what candidates will be on the ballot this fall. Don’t forget to register because every vote counts!”

Democratic voters in the 4th Congressional District must choose between Jim Himes and Lee Whitnum, with the winner facing incumbent Republican Christopher Shays in November. Meanwhile, Democrats are also choosing candidates in primaries for 3 State Senate districts, 12 State House districts and Registrars of Voters in Hartford, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme and West Haven.

Republicans in the 11 towns State Senate District #8 go to the polls to choose between candidates Kevin Witkos and Moira Wertheimer, who are running to replace retiring Republican State Senator Thomas Herlihy. The winner of that primary faces Democrat Arthur House in November. Republican voters are also choosing candidates in 9th, 17th, and 74th State House Districts and also must select candidates for Registrar of Voters in Hartford, New Britain, and Windham.

Polls will be open on Tuesday August 12th from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This will be the third state election in Connecticut using the new optical scan ballot machines.

“Voters in Connecticut can be assured that their votes are secure,” said Bysiewicz, “We will have a paper ballots as a record of every vote. Our poll workers will be ready for the primaries and will count all votes cast accurately and completely. Voters can also rest assured, their privacy will be protected at every polling place.”

A random sampling of 10% of all precincts to vote on primary day will be selected on August 19th for an audit to ensure accuracy of the optical scan machines. The audit will be conducted between August 27th and September 10th.

Information on how to use the machines and fill out paper ballots is available by going to Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz’s website www.sots.ct.gov or by calling 860-509-6200. Secretary Bysiewicz reminds voters to bring proper identification with them to the polls, including a drivers license or Social security card, bank statement, utility bill and/or pay stub.

Bysiewicz earlier reported that more than 100,000 new voters have registered for the 2008 elections. Voter registration materials are also available online at the Secretary of the State’s website.
