“Today is the deadline for any petitioning candidates wishing to get on the ballot in November to turn in their signed nominating petitions, said Bysiewicz. “Local officials have until August 19th to verify the petitions have been signed by registered voters. Anyone who turns in the required number of signatures will be on the ballot in November.” Petitioning candidates seeking offices other than president this November must submit petitions with signatures equal to at least 1% of the votes cast for that office in the preceding election. Connecticut voters will have an opportunity next week to head to the polls and cast ballots in the state’s primary elections. Residents have until August 11th at noon to register for the primaries in person at their town offices. Registration forms sent by mail must be postmarked no later than tomorrow, August 7th, in order to be processed in time for the primaries. In addition, registration forms delivered to town offices by anyone other than the voter must be turned in no later than August 7th in order to be eligible to vote in the primaries. “We are just days away from some very important and exciting primaries,” said Bysiewicz. “I strongly urge voters to go to the polls Tuesday August 12th to choose what candidates will be on the ballot this fall. There is still time to register to vote. You can obtain a voter registration card by visiting my website www.sots.ct.com or by going to your local town hall.” Democratic voters in the 4th Congressional District may choose between Jim Himes and Lee Whitnum, with the winner facing incumbent Republican Christopher Shays in November. Meanwhile, Democrats are also choosing candidates in primaries for 3 State Senate districts, 12 State House districts and Registrars of Voters in Hartford, Old Saybrook, Old Lyme and West Haven. Republicans in the 11 towns State Senate District #8 go to the polls to choose between candidates Kevin Witkos and Moira Wertheimer, who are running to replace retiring Republican State Senator Thomas Herlihy. The winner of that primary faces Democrat Arthur House in November. Republican voters are also choosing candidates in 9th, 17th, and 74th State House Districts and also must select candidates for Registrar of Voters in Hartford, New Britain, and Windham. Polls will be open on Tuesday August 12th from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. This will be the third state election in Connecticut using the new optical scan ballot machines. © Copyright by NorwalkPlus.com.
