Statewide forums announced to help homeowners with subprime mortgages

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced the state is offering a series of free forums around the state over the next three months to help homeowners with subprime adjustable rate mortgages convert them to traditional 30-year fixed rate loans.

“Holding on to the American dream is more difficult than ever in this current economic climate,” Governor Rell said. “Connecticut homeowners, like the rest of the nation, are feeling the effects of the mortgage crisis. That alone is hard enough, but coupled with the high energy and food prices we are all paying, they are being hit on all fronts. These forums are designed to provide the information borrowers need to keep their homes and avoid foreclosure.”

The weekend forums, sponsored by the Connecticut Housing Finance Authority (CHFA), will be held in Windham, New London, Vernon, Bridgeport, East Hartford, Norwalk and Meriden.

Information will be available on Governor Rell’s $50 million Connecticut Fair Alternative Mortgage Lending and Educational Services (CT FAMILIES), designed to assist homeowners convert their loans to fixed-rate mortgages.

“Beyond providing a financial safety net for families, one of the most important elements of CT FAMILIES is the direct support and contact it offers to homeowners in need,” Governor Rell said.

The forums also will feature information on other refinancing programs, financial and credit counseling and delinquency intervention. Other services include information from Connecticut Fair Housing and the Department of Banking on predatory lending. Representatives from companies that made subprime loans in the state will be on hand to work out agreements or modify loans with borrowers. Homeowners struggling to pay utility bills because of high mortgage payments also can get assistance from representatives from utility companies, who will attend the forums.
