Norwalk, CT –Mayor Richard Moccia, Superintendent Susan Marks, and Library Board President Stan Siegel will come to the main library at One Belden Avenue at noon on Wednesday, September 1, the first day of school, to officially proclaim September, 2010, as Library Card Sign-up Month, and to announce Norwalk’s goal of having every school student in Norwalk possess a public library card.
“A library card has always been the most important school supply of all,” says Stan Siegel. “Today’s libraries are thriving technology hubs that millions rely on as either their first or only choice for computer and Internet access. In doing so, libraries provide children with not only the tools to be literate, but information literate as well. There’s a lot happening in Norwalk’s libraries, and the best part for both children and parents – in these though economic times - is that it’s all free with a library card.”
Later this month, all schoolchildren will bring home a Library Borrower’s Card Application, also available in the main library and in the South Norwalk Branch Library. A parent or legal guardian must accompany the child to the library, and must bring a photo ID with proof of Norwalk residency. Parents are asked to take responsibility for library materials, to give permission (or not) for their children to use the Internet at the public library, and to ensure that nobody but the student use the card because library cards are not transferable.
Observed since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month is a time when the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country remind parents that a library card is the most important school supply of all.
