WASHINGTON, CT - U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.) on Wednesday voted to overturn a recent Trump administration policy allowing organizations that engage in political activity to hide the source of their funding. Murphy was a cosponsor of the Congressional Review Act resolution of disapproval introduced by U.S. Senators Jon Tester (D-Mont.) and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) to overturn a Treasury Department decision to eliminate the requirement for certain tax exempt groups to report donors to the IRS. The resolution of disapproval passed the U.S. Senate 50-49.

“Groups that spend money to sway an election should disclose their donors to voters, full stop. The only people who benefit from hiding the true source of this funding are the rich and powerful who seek to throw around their influence without leaving fingerprints,” said Murphy. “Overturning this backwards decision would be a small but critical step. It’s despicable that the administration and Senate Republicans are going all in to protect special interests from telling the IRS who’s really paying the bills.”

Murphy is a cosponsor of Tester’s Spotlight Act to require 501(c)(4), 501(c)(5) and 501(c)(6) organizations to publicly disclose their donors.
