After visiting the scene of the power plant explosion earlier today, Governor Rell issued a statement noting that the scene is still very much active.
"The scene in Middletown is still very active and dozens of state, local and other officials are working tirelessly. Their efforts are expected to continue through the rest of the day and night and into tomorrow. As details are confirmed, Middletown officials, who have control of the scene, will brief the community and the media," said Governor Rell. "I thank the many first responders who are braving the very cold and windy conditions. I ask the people of Connecticut to keep those working at the plant at the time of the explosion and their families in their prayers."
There are still conflicting reports, but it is believed that at least two people are dead and possibly as much as 100 are injured.
Local emergency response teams continued to work on the scene Sunday afternoon trying to deal with fire hot spots and help anyone who might have been injured in the blast.
It is also believed that nearby homes were damaged in the blast, but no immediate confirmation for additional casualties were available at this time.
There are numerous twitter reports from people that say were as far away as North Guilford who said that they clearly heard the blast. One person described it as a loud sound resembling a sonic boom.
Middletown is a Connecticut city of about fifty thousand people situated roughly 15 miles south of Hartford.
