Make A Difference day is the most encompassing national day of helping others – a celebration of neighbors helping neighbors. It is an annual event that takes place on the fourth Saturday of October. This is the second year in a row that Stamford Museum & Nature Center has partnered with The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County and to help Make A Difference in the community. “Stamford Museum & Nature Center is proud to once again partner with The Food bank of Lower Fairfield County. By simply bringing along a non-perishable food item to Stamford Museum & Nature Center, visitors will be helping to ease hunger experienced by many in our area,” said Melissa Mulrooney, Executive Director of Stamford Museum & Nature Center. The food bank suggests “kid-friendly” items such as peanut butter, jellies and jams, jarred spaghetti sauce, two-pound bags of white or brown rice, canned soup, low-sugar breakfast cereals, and canned juices such as grape or apple juice for donation. According to The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County, in Connecticut, one out of every five children is hungry or at risk of hunger. School holidays and vacations are an additional strain, as these children do not receive the Federal Free Breakfast and Lunch while not in school. Additionally, in Lower Fairfield County, hunger programs have doubled in volume in just the past two years. The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County distributes over 800,000 pounds of food per year.
