The internal affairs unit has received criticism for lengthy internal affairs investigations. Earlier this month, Governor Rell summoned more than 60 state police managers to the governor's residence in Hartford, telling them that internal affairs issues “must be dealt with aggressively, responsibly and effectively.” At that meeting, the Governor set a two-week deadline for the Department of Public Safety to complete pending 2006 investigations. In a March 20 letter to the Governor informing her that her two-week deadline had been met, Commissioner Danaher also said that the Department’s Professional Standards Division will meet the Governor’s “90-day deadline for other, existing internal affairs investigations and will adhere to that deadline with regard to all new inventory.” “The Department of Public Safety is on the right track in transforming the internal affairs process,” Governor Rell said. “We want the State Police Internal Affairs unit to be a model for the rest of the nation in promoting integrity within the department, and I am pleased with the progress that is being made.” Commissioner Danaher said that the two exceptions from the pending 2006 investigations are matters that are technically on the Department of Public Safety’s Professional Standards Division’s inventory, but which are under investigation by another entity that is not subject to control by the Professional Standards Division. © Copyright by NorwalkPlus.com.
