More than 9,000 step out at 12 different sites across Connecticut

More than 6,000 Connecticut residents battle the unpredictable effects of multiple sclerosis (MS). In a show of support, each year thousands of loved ones, friends, neighbors and co-workers lace up and step out in solidarity for a single cause – to end the devastating effects of MS. This year more than 9,000 participants stepped out May 4 for the Travelers Walk MS, raising almost $1.1 million toward its goal.

Hosted by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter, the event took place at 12 sites statewide to include Cheshire, Clinton, Enfield, Litchfield, Manchester, New London, Norwalk, Simsbury, Storrs, West Hartford, West Haven and Woodstock.

“This year’s turnout for the event was remarkable,” said Lisa Gerrol, Connecticut Chapter president. The state-wide outpouring of support for families affected by multiple sclerosis provides hope and help for so many,” said Lisa Gerrol, Connecticut Chapter president. “It’s clear communities across the state understand the challenges facing people with multiple sclerosis and are eager to join the movement to help find a cure.”

Multiple sclerosis is a chronic, often disabling disease, usually diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 50. Symptoms can range from numbness in the limbs, loss of vision and, in severe cases, complete paralysis. The progression, severity and specific symptoms related to MS in any one person cannot be predicted, but advances in research and treatments are providing hope to those affected by the disease. Funds raised at chapter events, such as the Travelers Walk MS, ensure ongoing scientific research to find a cure and provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to Connecticut residents affected by MS.

The chapter raised $1.1 million last year. To date the Travelers Walk MS has raised $1.1 million toward a $1.5 million 2008 goal. Site specific fundraising goals are as follows:

Litchfield – 68,500
Manchester – 130,500
New London – 98,000
Norwalk – 276,000
Simsbury - $78,000
Storrs - $34,000
West Hartford - $175,500
West Haven - $119,000
Woodstock - $45,000
