On Thursday, Nov. 13, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Connecticut Chapter hosted the 30th annual MS Dinner of Champions to honor New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain, 23, with the 2008 J. Walter Kennedy Award. Chamberlain is knows firsthand how disability affects families. His father, Harlan, contracted polio as a child.

Chamberlain, a native of Lincoln, Neb., witnessed the lifelong physical effects of his father’s bout with an illness that affected more than 60,000 Americans, and which took the lives more than 3,000 Americans at its height in 1952. The chapter also recognized New York Yankees senior vice president and general manager Brian Cashman with the 2008 MS Special Achievement Award; John Gallin & Son with the Sylvia Lawry Founder’s Award; and Wilton, Conn., resident Charles Gebbia with the MS Hope Award. Other distinguished guests include: Rod Gilbert, New York Rangers; Charles Grodin, author, actor and commentator; and Omar Minaya, general manager, New York Mets.

The awards ceremony, held at the Marriott Hotel in Stamford, Conn., attracted more than 275 guests from throughout Fairfield County and beyond. The event, which featured a cocktail reception, dinner, an awards ceremony, and both silent and live auctions, raised more than $300,000. Funds raised through chapter events, such as the 30th annual MS Dinner of Champions, ensure ongoing scientific research to find better treatments and a cure. These funds also provide for the continuation of vital programs and services offered by the chapter to those in Connecticut living with multiple sclerosis.

The 2008 MS Dinner of Champions committee co-chairpersons included Mary A. Rauscher, a trustee with the Connecticut chapter; Bruce S. Tobin, executive vice president and chief operating officer of leasing with Simon Property Group; and Terrance M. Walsh, vice president of sales with MC2, a model management company in New York.
