Brookfield Craft Center, a national profile not-for-profit school and gallery for fine craftsmanship will honor Kent, CT ceramic artist Alison Palmer as their September “Featured Artist of the Month”. The public is invited to a “Meet the Artist Reception” on Sunday, September 7th from 2-4pm. Admission is free. A selection of wood-fired sculptural ceramic vessels by Ms. Palmer will be on display in the Center’s Retail Shop.

Alison Palmer was born and raised in New York. After graduating high school she attended Kansas City Art Institute as well as the California College of Arts and Crafts where she received her BFA in ceramics. Alison then returned to New York where she implemented a “treatment through crafts” program at Four Winds Psychiatric Hospital in Katonah. While teaching at Four Winds, Alison began her own studio at a converted old schoolhouse in Croton Falls, New York. She met and married musician Steve Katz. Together they created a company called Ashes to Ashes which produced funerary urns for animals. The urns were to be designed and handmade by Alison while Steve did the sales and marketing. The pressures of dealing with grieving clients, however, were too much for the couple and so they concentrated solely on Alison’s handcrafted ideas.

By 1986, Alison was exhibiting her work at a few of the finer craft galleries in New York City and elsewhere. The recognition her work received at the major wholesale shows was overwhelming and Alison and Steve had to cope with the challenge of learning the “business” of crafts while at the same time exploring new areas of Alison’s creativity. Today, Alison Palmer can boast representation by over a thousand galleries, museum shops and catalogs in America and abroad.

Each month Brookfield Craft Center, a national profile school and gallery for fine craftsmanship, features an in-depth collection of work by a different local artist. A wide range of work is displayed in a special area in their retail/gift shop along with information about the artist, their designs, how they make their work and what inspires them. This exhibition has been made possible by The Lynn Tendler Bignell Foundation and the CT Commission on Culture and Tourism.

The Gift Shop at Brookfield Craft Center is housed in their historic (circa 1780) restored grist mill building which is located at 286 Whisconier Road (Route 25) in Brookfield. It features handmade fine craftwork by hundreds of American artists. Their charming colonial vintage campus is comprised of six buildings and is about one hour's drive from New Haven, Hartford, Stamford, Westchester & Duchess Counties, and the Greater Metropolitan New York City area.

Brookfield Craft Center was founded in 1954 to "promote and preserve the skills and values of fine craftsmanship". Today it is one of America's finest non-academic schools for professional craft studies enrolling over 1500 students each year from throughout the nation. Its two galleries showcase the work of the nation’s finest craft artists.
