John A. Klein honored for community service
Samuel Hawley Award Event
John A. Klein, former President and Chief Executive Officer of People’s United Bank, was awarded the bank’s prestigious Samuel W. Hawley Award posthumously during the annual Hawley Award Dinner at the People’s United headquarters on April 15. Mr. Klein passed away in January of this year and Carla Klein, his wife of 37 years, accepted the award on his behalf.

The Samuel W. Hawley Public Service Award was established in 1983 to honor Hawley, a former President and Chief Executive Officer of the bank, who was a pioneer in Bridgeport-area civic and corporate commitment. It is bestowed each year to a member of the People’s family who, through personal commitment and activity, has demonstrated the qualities of community service and citizenship that exemplify Hawley's illustrious career. Hawley served with great distinction as president, chairman of the board and chairman of the executive committee of People’s United Bank during a 70-year affiliation with People’s prior to his death in 2002.

“Over the years, John received many well-deserved awards and honors for his service to the community – but I think it is fair to say that he would have been most proud to receive this award, because of his admiration and respect for Mr. Hawley and for the ideals of community service that Mr. Hawley and this award represent,” said People’s United’s President and Chief Executive Officer Philip Sherringham.

During his 36-year career at People’s United, Klein held leadership roles in a number of business and community development organizations. He was the past chairman and a member of the board of the Connecticut Business and Industry Association, the Connecticut Bankers Association, and the Bridgeport Economic Development Advisory Council. Early in his career, he was active in the Connecticut Bar Association. He also served on the boards of the Bridgeport Regional Business Council and the Business Council of Fairfield County and was a member of the Transportation Strategy Board.

John was passionate about education and youth. This commitment was reflected in his service to a variety of organizations, including as a director of Sacred Heart University and the UConn Foundation. He was chairman of the University of Connecticut’s capital campaign in Fairfield County and was an advisory board member for the New England College of Finance. He served as co-chair of both the Governor’s Prevention Partnership, and Operation Respect CT.

John was also actively involved in community health and social services, serving as a member of the United Way Allocations Council, past Chairman of the Board and director of Bridgeport Hospital and as a member of the boards of Yale-New Haven Hospital and the Greater Bridgeport Area Foundation.

Finally, last year, under John’s leadership, the bank established the People’s United Community Foundation, which will continue the bank’s commitment to community betterment now and in the future.

In honor of John, the award money will be donated to the John A. and Carla S. Klein Family Research Professorship in Thoracic Surgery at the University of Michigan.
