Jardine Cribs should be recalled due to strangulation and entrapment hazard

Inspectors from the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection are visiting retail establishments, conducting recall effectiveness checks in response to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission’s voluntary recall on June 24, 2008 of “Jardine Cribs” manufactured in China and Vietnam. The cribs were sold nationwide at Toys “R” Us, Babies “R” Us, Kids World, Geoffrey Stores and babiesrus.com, from January 2002 through May 2008 for approximately $150 to $300. The Mahogany Positano Lifetime Crib, Model # 0309K00, sold for $450. The potential for strangulation and entrapment occurs if the wooden crib slats and spindles break, creating a gap for the child to become entrapped or injured.

The cribs were sold in a variety of styles and finishes. Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell, Jr. urged consumers who have these cribs to immediately cease using them and contact Jardine for a full credit toward the purchase of a new crib. There have been forty-two (42) incidents reported of crib slats and/or spindles breaking, resulting in four (4) children becoming entrapped and two (2) being injured.
