In ceremony, Governor Rell signs child product safety bill

In a ceremony at a New Britain toy store, Governor M. Jodi Rell today signed into law a bill that requires the state to phase in stricter limits for lead in children's products and warning labels on consumer products.

The bill requires the state to compile a list of children’s toys that contain banned hazardous substances and post that list on the Department of Consumer Protection’s website at www.ct.gov/dcp. In addition, the state must develop a certificate of disposition for retailers and wholesalers to account for any children's product that is subject to a recall.

“The well-being and safety of Connecticut's children is the foremost priority for the administration,” Governor Rell said. “While we have made great strides to protect their well-being and safety, there is always more that we can and should do to protect our children. This law provides that protection.

“This law will allow the state to monitor the level of toxicity in toys and place warnings where they might be due. Many people are amazed to learn that there is still lead in many of the toys that we as parents are buying for our children. While parents throughout Connecticut have become increasingly vigilant in their efforts to safeguard their children from toys containing hazardous substances, it is time we made their lives easier by better disseminating crucial information at the point of retail sale.”

The governor signed Public Act 08-106, An Act Concerning Child Product Safety at Amato’s Toy and Hobby. The law takes effect October 1.
