Mayor Pedro E. Segarra today announced the appointments of the Marketing, Events, and Cultural Affairs Director and the Human Resources Director.

Kristina Newman-Scott, an artist with nearly 15 years of experience in arts management and administration, will serve as the City’s Marketing, Events, and Cultural Affairs Director as part of the Development Services Department. Valda G. Washington, a longtime human resources professional, will serve as the Human Resources Director.

“I am thrilled to have Kristina and Valda join the City of Hartford’s management team,” Mayor Segarra said. “Both of these women have exemplary professional reputations and will add tremendous value to the development and growth of Connecticut’s Capital City.”

Newman-Scott previously served as Director of Programs for the Boston Center for the Arts. In that role, she redesigned and increased participation in the organization’s programs by 20 percent and heightened the Center’s national and international profile.

A senior level human resources professional with more than 20 years’ experience implementing and managing cost-effective human resources programs, Washington previously served as the Chief of Staff for the Human Resources Department for the City of Markham, IL. She had also served as that city’s Director of Human Resources and as a Human Resources Manager for Chicago’s Holy Cross Hospital.

Both Newman-Scott and Washington will live in Hartford. Newman-Scott will assume her position on March 5th; Washington will start with the City on March 19th.
