Governor Rell tours Norwich fire scene, urges Red Cross donations to help displaced families

Governor M. Jodi Rell today toured the scene of a six-alarm blaze that destroyed the 120-unit Peachtree Apartments in Norwich this weekend, leaving 150 people homeless. The Governor urged people across Connecticut to donate to the Red Cross, which is helping the victims of the blaze.

After a briefing by state and local emergency management officials, Governor Rell then visited victims of the fire, who are receiving services at the Uncas School on Elizabeth Street. Several state and local agencies are set up at the school to provide assistance. The Red Cross is helping families financially with money for shelter, clothes, food, medications and medical needs.

“These Norwich families’ lives have been turned upside down and people want to know what they can do to help,” Governor Rell said. “We can all help by donating to the Red Cross. Connecticut is a caring, compassionate state, and I hope residents will give what they can to help the victims of this fire. Please make a donation to American Red Cross local disaster relief by calling toll-free (877) 243-5727 or visiting www.charteroak.redcross.org.”

“I thank the men and women who risked their lives to put out this inferno,” Governor Rell said. “They have done an outstanding job in keeping these families and this city safe. I also commend the efforts of the Red Cross and the many state and local officials who are providing ongoing services to the displaced residents.”

The Governor said the state would be working with the town to determine its future needs.
