On Tuesday April 15, the State of Connecticut held a major award ceremony presenting awards to twenty-one entities, including municipalities, retailers, schools, churches and manufacturers, for their leadership and commitment to reducing energy consumption and air pollution during the critical summer months of 2007.

“Nothing is more critical to our state’s energy infrastructure than reducing energy consumption on peak energy days in the summer” said Governor M. Jodi Rell. “These award winners have clearly demonstrated that anyone and everyone can be a constructive partner in achieving significant decreases in energy consumption in the critical summer months, lowering energy costs for all consumers, decreasing environmental pollution and preventing black-outs.”

“Continued high demand for energy in New Haven and Fairfield Counties has challenged us to try new, cost-effective ways to protect the reliability of our electricity delivery systems, particularly during the summer months.” Said Donald W. Downes, Chairman of the Connecticut Department of Public Utility Control. “Energy efficiency, conservation and demand response are gaining increased recognition as effective strategies to enhance electric system reliability by reducing demand.”

“By taking simple steps to reduce electricity use, all of us can preserve available energy resources, which, in turn, will have a positive impact on our economy.” Downes continued. “Through these awards we are recognizing the program participants for their critical contributions toward energy conservation, enhancing system-wide energy reliability and improved air quality.”

The Summer Energy Savers Program was instituted to encourage and reward Connecticut businesses and institutions who reduced their electricity consumption during the summer months between 5% and 20% over the previous 2 summers. Increased summer energy demand, driven almost exclusively by usage of air conditioners, plays a substantial role in increased consumer costs for electricity. The Summer Energy Savers Program was designed to decrease summer energy demand which lowers overall energy costs, improves regional air-quality and lessens the need for additional energy generation facilities.

The combined efforts of these awardees resulted in energy savings of over 2.3 million kilowatt hours of electricity and lowered peak electricity demand by over 2,100 kilowatts. To achieve their savings, the awardees utilized various incentives offered by the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund programs available through The Connecticut Light & Power Company and the United Illuminating Company. The winners attended an award ceremony on April 15th held in their honor at the State Capitol.

In Tuesday’s ceremony, the twenty-one awards presented by State agency commissioners were:

· A Platinum Award, for the most outstanding achievement in electricity use from among all the awardees at 27%, was presented to the Town of Newtown Highway Garage.

· Two Peak Performer Awards for the highest achievement during Summer 2007 in reducing electricity load as part of ISO-New England’s Load Response program without the use of back-up diesel generation were presented to:

· Ansonia Copper & Brass of Waterbury and Pennant Foods of North Haven for reductions of 770 kilowatts and 711 kilowatts, respectively.

· Four Gold Awards for a greater than 20% reduction in electricity consumption as well as demand were presented to:

· Champ Direct Printing & Mailing of Milford, Town of Oxford Public Works, Rite Aid #1790 of Waterbury, and United Methodist Church of New Canaan.

· Eight Silver Awards for a 10% to 20% reduction in electricity consumption as well as demand were presented to:

· City of Stamford Adult Learning Center, Town of Prospect Public Library, Town of Westport Fire Department, Bella Vista of Meriden, Dichello Distributors of Orange, FCI USA, Inc. Bethel Plant, Merritt 7 Corporate Park, and Trinity Catholic High School of Stamford

· Six Bronze Awards for a 5% to 10% reduction in electricity consumption as well as demand were presented to:

· City of Norwalk Chief Jack Yost Station 1, Convent of the Sacred Heart School in Greenwich, Leed-Himmel Industries of Hamden, RexCorp Realty LLC – Shelton location, Regional YMCA of Bethel, and YMCA of Norwalk.
