The Governor asks that flags fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, the day of Aponte’s funeral. Aponte, 43, died September 9 when his cruiser and another patrol car collided while responding to a call. Officer Diane Gonzalez, who was in the second cruiser, was seriously injured. “Sgt. Aponte put his life on the line every day for 17 years to protect the citizens of New Haven. His death reminds us all of the risks faced daily by law enforcement officers across the state,” Governor Rell said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of Sgt. Aponte and Officer Gonzalez and their fellow officers.” © Copyright by NorwalkPlus.com.
