Through the VITA program, IRS-certified NCC student volunteers will offer free tax preparation and e-filing services from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays, from Feb. 5 through April 16, in the NCC West Campus room W135.
These volunteers have received extensive training in tax preparation and are qualified to prepare and file State and Federal tax returns. Tax returns will be prepared on a walk-in basis only; no appointments are necessary.
The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, part of a nationwide initiative, offers free federal and state tax return preparation to households earning less than $49,000 per year. In addition to tax preparation, VITA customers also have the opportunity to learn about other free services such as matched savings accounts and financial education.
Norwalk Community College is one of two VITA sites in Norwalk; another site will be Held at NEON Inc. These sites belong to the Greater Bridgeport Family Economic Success Coalition. In 2010, this coalition’s VITA sites prepared more than 2,600 tax returns and returned more than $4.1 million in tax refunds to local families. Out of that total, $1.2 million came from the Earned Income Tax Credit, which mainly benefits low-income working families.
Due to the difficult economy, in 2011 VITA is expected to reach more Fairfield County households than ever before.
The 2011 VITA Campaign is funded by the IRS, the United Way of Coastal Fairfield County, Wachovia (a Wells Fargo Company), Citigroup, JP Morgan Chase, Near & Far Aid, Webster Bank, and People’s United Bank.
