Governor M. Jodi Rell today ordered U.S. and state flags to be lowered to half staff to honor a U.S. Marine from Waterbury who was killed while serving in Iraq.

Corporal Christian S. Cotner, 20, of Waterbury, died May 30 from a non-hostile incident in Al Anbar province, Iraq. He was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 172, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.

“By all accounts, Corporal Cotner was a remarkable young man who was doing what he loved the most: serving his country,” Governor Rell said. “The news of his loss is heart-breaking for all Connecticut residents. Corporal Cotner was proud to serve as a U.S. Marine, and he courageously put on the uniform to protect our freedom. On behalf of all state residents, I extend our deepest sympathies to his friends and family.”

At the Governor’s direction, flags will remain at half staff until Corporal Cotner has been interred. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalized.
