Eighteenth Holocaust tree in Fairfield planted at Fairfield Museum

Next to Fairfield Museum, on the historic Town Green, amid the trees flowering for spring you will find a newly planted weeping cherry tree with a stone marker that says “Remembering the Holocaust - The People of Fairfield - 2008.”

A dedication ceremony, led by Silvia Neigher, the chairwoman of the Fairfield Holocaust Commemoration Committee was held yesterday. “We thank the Fairfield Museum for making this space available and we hope that this tree with be another reminder of what happened in the past from which we learn and look into the future to avoid such a human tragedy.”

This tree is the eighteenth tree planted in Fairfield in memory of the victims of the Holocaust, and its dedication coincides with Fairfield Museum’s current exhibit, Celebrating Our Cultural Legacies: Fairfield’s Jewish Community. The exhibit features artifacts that reflect the rich traditions of Jewish religion and culture, and presents the story of Jewish settlement in the Fairfield and Bridgeport areas. The exhibit is open just through this weekend, Sunday, May 11.
